Municipality Piran

The Municipality Piran had 17,800 inhabitants in 2010 (399 per square kilometre), and covers an area of 45 square kilometres (17.4 sq mi). The municipality is bilingual, both Slovene and Italian are official languages.

Piran is situated on a narrow peninsula which penetrates deep into Piran Gulf . Piran's most typical features are Saint George's church and Piran Town Walls on the slopes of the hill Mogoron. The first origins of Piran area date back to Bronze and Iron Ages. The name of Piran derives from a Greek word for fire »Pyr«. The town of Piran was born in the time of ancient Romans and it further prospered during the rule of Venetian Republic.

Piran was heavily influenced by the Venetian Republic and Austria-Hungary, therefore the monuments differ greatly from those in inner parts of Slovenia.
